Deal of the month – active for 20 more days.

Hello there,

I keep forgetting that it’s a “leap year” and we have that extra day here in the month to get some extra tasks accomplished.  I don’t know if it was by design, but many major events are aligned with leap years like 2016.

The UEFA European Football Championship, Summer Olympic Games, United States Presidential Election and Winter Olympic Games (up until 1992) are all held on leap years. While there is no definitive reason why these events happen to only take place during leap years and it may be solely due to coincidence, they all help to make leap years particularly special.

Another interesting fact about leap year:  Women Can Propose to a Man on February 29th!

I believe that this “rule” doesn’t apply much to us today, but since the 19th century, tradition has stated that women have the right to propose to a man on February 29th. In times where gender roles were more concrete than today, this was considered a very unique and bold thing to do. The practice dates all the way back to 1288 where the tradition was first observed in Scotland. In recent years, the tradition has become more playful with the concept of the Sadie Hawkings Dance, where young girls ask boys to accompany them to the event.

When asked how many days in a year, the common answer is 365 days, but in actuality the Earth actually takes more than 365 days to complete a rotation; it takes about 365.2422 days. This translates to every year actually being a year and one quarter days. To account for this problem, every four years an additional day is added to the calendar. In the traditional Gregorian calendar adopted by a the United States and many other areas of the world, this day comes in the form of February 29. Years containing this extra calendar day are known as leap years. Since they only happen once every four years, people have long associate leap years with special traditions and customs. Have a friend or loved one that was born on 2/29?  That’s an interesting one indeed!

MacBook Pro Unibody – known problem.

Hello friends,

The MacBook Pro Unibody laptops that don’t have a “user replaceable battery” (there is a version that a customer can easily repair the battery themselves) – have a problem that you might want to know about.

After a few years of use, the battery can tend to have issues; but sometimes the symptom starts as a failing trackpad…let me explain. When one of these batteries fails, it can “puff up”.

Although I’ll be talking primarily about Mac laptops in this post, swollen batteries can be found in many devices that use lithium batteries, including Smartphones. There’s also no single cause for a swollen battery. Some are due to manufacturing defects, others are caused by the age of the battery, and still other cases can be caused by misuse, such as not properly exercising the battery over time, or by using the wrong power charger.

In general, a swollen battery occurs when the battery’s cells are overcharged.  This can lead to warping of your case, and pressure under your trackpad that can cause it to stop clicking or even pop up and out of the palmrest.

Here’s what a failed battery looks like when I pulled one out of a MacBook Pro yesterday:

Just check your battery meter in the top tool bar on your Mac.  If it ever warns you to “replace battery soon”, then run (don’t walk!) to your nearest Mission Repair for replacement.  We can take care of you fast, and save you potentially costly repairs before the battery pops.

Take care, Ryan

It’s almost “sugar cookie hunting season”.

Seasons Greetings.

Now that it’s December, I know that it’s getting close to sugar cookie time! Here’s a VERY FLATTERING picture of me last year as Dandra pulled the cookies from the oven:

December is filled with a lot of great “smells” in the Arter house. Sugar cookie scent is WAY UP THERE on the list of my favorites. The issue with these little beauties is that I can’t seem to eat an appropriate amount per “session”. I usually grab 2. Then stop back to 2 more…then a glass of milk…you can see how this is all adding up to an additional complete meal in my day.

Well, we’ve got a few “cookies” for you here at Mission Repair. Hopefully you got in on the savings over Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Those were a lot of fun. In case you missed it, we will be sending out some specials that will make you smile. Just like these cookies did for me. Check back here often over the next week or so and stay tuned…

Happy Holidays, Ryan
