It’s well known (to most) that Apple has discontinued the large-capacity iPod Classic devices; and there’s a mad rush and a little price gouging going on across the internet to obtain a new one.
Bidding wars have begun. I’m not sure that I need a discontinued iPod this badly!
I just checked on eBay and new, sealed units are selling in the range of $500-$600 – on auction (see the image above). They are being bid up to that point. It would seem there’s still a market for 160GB of storage and a music player that does nothing else but play music (and a little bit of video). The biggest iPod Touch currently offers 64GB of storage room but nothing compares the the massive 160GB Classic. Add in the fact that the iPod Classic is one of the most important gadgets in the history of modern technology, and it’s perhaps unsurprising that people are rushing to grab one before it’s too late.
Frankly, I like the iCloud so I don’t need much storage space in my hand…but I can certainly see the value to some businesses (especially DJ’s) that like to carry their music with them wherever they go.
Have an Classic that you’d like to keep alive? I don’t blame you. We have a full service line of iPod Classic repairs that keeps customers in the music and we’ve been offering them since the first iPod Classic delivered to the first customer. And we aren’t doubling our prices either 😉 Let us know if we can help you out!
Take care, Ryan
Good afternoon everyone;
If you’ve been following the Apple news today, you’ve learned that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 PLUS have been announced along with the iWatch. We’ve been talking non stop around the office today about the pros and cons of the new iPhones- a lot of people don’t want a bigger screen which is now going to be mandatory if you want a new iPhone 6!
Well a piece of news just came across the press airwaves today and we’re going to say “goodbye” to the iPod Classic. This is a moment in history which officially does away with mass storage via hard drive in the iPod.
iPhones have always been flash-based storage, as well as iPod Touch devices. But Apple has been holding on to the behemoth storage capabilities of the iPod Classic. If you wanted to carry around a lot of music with you, this is the device to do it with!
The very first iPod that was released back in October of 2001 which launched a series of MP3 players that all had “spinning” hard drive technology…and it was fantastic. As the years progressed, the drives got thinner…the iPods got smaller…and the technology made the drives faster and hold more data-
Until flash storage came along and has now outdated the “old” hard-drive style of iPod.
It’s time to say goodbye to an old friend; the iPod Classic as it is finally being discontinued by Apple, Inc. For better or worse, it’s time to move on. Rest in peace old friend, times are changing.
Mission Repair will still support iPod Classic repairs and services for years to come, so never fear – there’s a repair shop that understand the value of these “classic” beauties.
Take care, Ryan
Hello M:R Nation –
This time of year really brings out the nostalgic feelings towards the classics. The classics range anywhere from movies (“The Christmas Story”, “Christmas Vacation” and my personal favorite “The Santa Clause”), to food (chex mix, puppy chow, Christmas ham),drinks (eggnog, mulled wine, peppermint anything) and family traditions. At least, those are some of the things that I think about when talking about the “Holidays”. These things are so ingrained into my core, it wouldn’t be the holidays without them.
As I was thinking about what makes the “Holidays”… the “Holidays”, I somehow lost track and started thinking about Apple and their line up of iPods. Their line up has changed over the years. A new iPod Nano here, a redesigned iPod Touch there, but something that remains the same is the ultimate in classics. The iPod Classic!
The iPod Classic is so ingrained into the iPod line up, we as a human race wouldn’t know what to do without it. It made it’s first appearance in 2007 and has been a staple ever since! What makes it so ever present? Well there are my 3 bullet points on it .
- Click Wheel – You can never fully kill the click wheel! It is a life changing invention and I don’t ever want to see the end of it!
- Storage Capacity – Flash storage is still expensive when you get up to the 100+ GB range. Apple has yet to release any iPod touch with more than 64GB and most hard core music heads have at least double this in their library!
- Design – Its hard to fix something that is perfect. When you have finished project or a paper and you get to the point where you know its perfect, you usually don’t revisit it. You just know its done!
Mission Repair has supported the iPod Classic since its creation in 2007 and we are still proud supporters. When these need servicing, it is usually the LCD screen that needs replacing or a battery that has gone dead. We can help you with both of those issues and even more!
Do you still have an iPod classic or are you the owner of a brand new iPod Classic? I would love to hear what draws you to keep it for so long and/or purchase a new one. Shoot me an email at Troy@missionrepair.com and I just might send you something cool in return!
Hello M:R Nation,
Did you know that the iPod Classic is the longest running design in Apples arsenal? Thats right! It has been on the shelves since 2007 and with only a few minor revisions like larger capacity hard drives and thinner back casings have been done over the years.
So why has the iPod Classic for the most part been left untouched by Apple (A company known to redesign on a drop of a dime)? Our guess is that it is pretty close to perfect in their eyes OR the cost of flash memory (storage in all of the other iDevices) is still so high, that they can’t come close to a comparable storage/priced iPod touch at the moment.
Either Way, we are still very fond of the iPod Classic and have continued to service it over all of the these years! From the LCD to the logic board, there is nothing on this device that we can’t repair. You can see from the links above, we have a service for every major component on the iPod Classic and you can believe that we have mastered these devices from front to back!
If you find yourself in need of one of these lovely services, you can start by clicking the above link or calling us at 866-638-8402. We will have your iPod Classic back to it’s old Classic self in in no time!
