Good news for “older” iPhones! OS 9.2.1

Hello there everyone,

AppleInsider today reported that the iOS 9.2.1 update can potentially make iOS 9 a smoother experience for people with older iPhones, according to a new series of YouTube videos featuring side-by-side comparisons with devices running iOS 8.4.1.

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 2.54.29 PM.png

Although installing 9.2.1 still causes an iPhone 4S or 5 to boot slower, once in action the software can load apps as fast or faster than 8.4.1 in many circumstances, according to the article. Boot times are said to be speedier than 8.4.1 when running the software on an iPhone 5s, which was also the first iPhone with a 64-bit processor.

A consistent problem with iOS has been the tendency for devices as little as a year or two old to suddenly see slowdowns after upgrading to a new version. This is despite the fact that Apple will deliberately disable some processor-intensive features on older hardware.

A lawsuit filed last month accuses Apple of misleading customers with the claim that iOS 9 is compatible with devices ranging back to the iPhone 4S. In reality Apple is practicing planned obsolescence, the case charges, since people who update a 4S will take a performance hit but find themselves unable to downgrade to 8.4.1 or earlier — nudging them towards buying newer hardware.

We all know that these devices update and upgrade faster than our contracts allow, so unless you’re one of the few that just simply wants and can afford the newest piece of hardware every 6 months, you’ll want to extend the life of your “old” device for a long as possible to maximize your investment.  That’s where Mission Repair can help, so if you have a problem with your phone, we will be happy to take care of it for you.  If you want to upgrade your software, at least Apple is still helping some of the older units at the moment, enjoy!

See ya, Ryan

My iPhone caught on fire.

Good afternoon,

We heard this in our Lenexa store recently – a customer brought in her now dead iPhone 4S and her Apple cable. Look closely at the burn mark on the end and how the plastic has started to melt and warp:

She plugged in the device like she has done for years but this time it was different. It started smoking and almost caught on fire. It’s no secret that electricity can start fires, but I’m sure that my customer didn’t expect to see this happen when it’s worked fine for the hundreds of times before.

The next question was, “why did this happen?”

Well, there are a number of factors that can cause problems with electronics. Water being one of the biggest culprits…electronics are very sensitive to the amount of electricity that each component receives.

When electronics get wet, the water conducts the electricity all over the place and zaps the components with voltages they are not designed to handle. Connections melt or burn.

Basically, it’s like what happens when a ocean wave crashes in on top of a sand castle. It obliterates the subtle design needed to make it function.

Was it water that caused this? Who knows…it could have been dust, or one pin on this cable that was slightly bent, or a myriad of other things. We don’t typically do detailed failure analysis on issues like this unless a customer wants us to do so. Typically, all that is necessary is a new cable and a charging port repair on the iPhone 4S which is exactly what this unit needed.

BTW, it’s safer to start your next camp fire with matches 😉

See you, Ryan

Got Repair: Because You Never Know When It Will Happen Again!

Hello M:R Nation –

Forgive my long title, but that statement has never rang truer for one of our recent customers. After having an iPad repaired with us, this customer picked up said repaired iPad and went along their way. As they were approaching their vehicle, the iPad slipped out of their hand and once again, the iPad was cracked! This was a major shock to all of us. Never before had we seen a need for our Got Repair services in such a quick fashion. We felt super bad for this customer and waived the repair fees on the other damage that the drop had produced and the Got Repair fee covered the rest.

While we have never seen it happen so quickly, we hear of these stories all of the time. This is the very reason why we created this program a few years ago during a lunch break at one of our favorite Indian buffets. I will never forget the conversation that Ryan and I had. It all stemmed from dealing with a customer that had a device repaired with us just days prior and was back again for another screen repair on the same iPhone 3GS.  We thought, there has got to be a better way of doing this. It just didn’t feel right… so we changed it and Got Repair was born!

For those of you new to Mission Repair and our Repair Blog, let me explain what “Got Repair” is:

  • Think of it as ”The Real Lifetime Warranty”.  Check the competition.  When they offer lifetime warranties, this doesn’t include breakage again on the part you had repaired.  What good is a lifetime warranty on a piece of glass that only fails when it breaks?  Our “Got Repair” program covers re-repairing damaged glass and screens.
  • Think of it as a “Thank You” for coming back to Mission Repair.  If you have your device repaired with us, you already know that it can be broken.  And if you should somehow accidentally or intentionally damage it again, we want you to come back to Mission Repair.  We would make more money by charging you full price but you may decide not to repair your device more than once.  Our “Got Repair” program benefits encourage repeat business with a special thank you to every Mission Repair customer.
  • Think of it as the “New Standard” in which services should be performed. Mission Repair pioneers many programs and we set the standard for the market.
  • Think of it as the opposite of “Insurance”.  Insurance is just that.  You buy insurance “in case” something happens to your unit.  If nothing happens, you still pay.  Additionally, most insurance plans require a deductible and stringent rules to filing a claim.  Our “Got Repair” benefits cost you nothing up front.  Rather, we charge a small service fee for any repeat repair.  You can have the unit re-repaired once or 1000 times, this service fee will remain the same.

You can think of it as many things, but when you boil it down, its simply in place so you NEVER have to pay full price for the same repair on that SmartphoneTablet, or Laptop again! There is no catch.

You automatically qualify for this warranty by using Mission:Repair the first time around and if you decide that you don’t want to pay the lower service fee, we will gladly let you pay full price again :-) Of course I’m joking.

So, if you are trying to choose a service center, please take this benefit into account.

Cheers, Troy

Got Repair?

Hello M:R Nation –

We receive a lot of requests per day to explain what our “Got Repair” Lifetime  Warranty actually is. Please allow yourself a few moments to read some of the information below…
