I dropped my iPhone on the carpet and it broke!

Hello friends – we have heard this time and time again.

Can it be true? Dropping an iPhone on your living room rug can cause the screen to crack? I can remember my early Motorola phone that I would intentionally toss across the room – or on the ground – easily on a carpeted surface – and not have an issue.

The fact is that it is true. If you drop an iPhone on carpet it can crack. I have not personally ever seen it, but since we’ve repaired almost a quarter of a million devices in the last 6 years, the sheer number of customers that have stated this is staggering.

What can be done about this? Firstly, keep your iPhone in a case. If you’re a purist like me, that’s going to be tough. I like the sleek and stylish look of the iPhone without a case engulfing it’s body, but if you’re accident prone the case just might save you a trip to our service center. The sad truth is that a case doesn’t guarantee your iPhone’s safety. That’s where Mission Repair can come in handy.

We are constantly running specials and coupon codes for customers to get their iPhones fixed quickly. So if you’re in the market because you’ve recently dropped your iPhone onto the family heirloom rug (or anywhere else) just give us a call. 866-639-8402. We’re here for you.

AppleCare+ Is it what you’re expecting it to be?

Hello all!

We had our October 4th release from Apple, and personally I think it was a little disappointing. No iPhone 5. Well, the iPhone 4S seems like it has some nifty improvements but its just not enough for me to get really excited. Remember my blog from September 21, 2011? I predicted a “limited” launch on the iPhone 5 in October and I was wrong. We got a “non” launch and it looks like we have some more time to wait for the soon-to-be-legendary iPhone 5.

However we did get AppleCare+ (AppleCare plus) that gives you 2 incidents of accidental damage when you purchase it! This is a breakthrough when you buy your iPhone- you can purchase the AppleCare+ plan and have peace of mind when you buy an iPhone from Apple. Or does it? Let’s take a look at their “included” accidental incident plan, and let’s focus on the screen, which is the most common expensive “accidental” repair. Let’s face it; AppleCare + covers accessories like your earbuds, but it also comes with a $49 replacement fee. . .so I think that I’d rather buy a replacement set of Apple earbuds on eBay for $14.99 outright rather than kill one of my 2 chances for any kind of REAL repair for $49. Let’s dig a little deeper-

1. You have to pay $99 up front to be included in the plan. This is a bit unnerving to have to spend an extra (almost) hundred dollars when you’re already making a purchase, but heck, it can come in handy, right? The issue is that if you DON’T drop or crack your screen you’re out that $99. There’s no turning back!

2. Now, let’s assume you DID buy the AppleCare+ plan for your iPhone. And then you dropped it. No biggie, you’re covered. Yup, you’re covered alright, for an additional $49. This service costs you another $49 on top of the $99. Sheesh!

3. Let’s say you pay the $99, plus the $49, and you drop it again. I mean, how many times can this happen to one person? Believe me unless you have the iPhone tethered to your wrist you know that small items can be dropped – and Apple includes 2 incidents of coverage for a reason. OK Apple will take care of you again for another $49. Bing, there ya go.

4. Ok, here’s where it gets fun. Let’s say you break it for the 3rd time. It’s getting expensive now because Apple is going to charge you $199 for the repair. Remember that they only cover 2 incidents of accidental damage – and you’re into these 3 repairs for $396. You read that right, $396. And if you should happen to break it again? Just keep on adding $199 to the price. Pretty soon you’ll have to take out a second mortgage.

Here at Mission Repair, we were built for this exact scenario. Let’s take a look at this matrix, and you can click on it to get a larger image:

1. We don’t charge you anything up front. So if you never break the screen, you never pay us a dime.

2. Let’s say you do break your iPhone 4 glass. It’s a common issue, and Mission Repair is here to help. As of today, October 6th, 2011 our repair price is $99 which includes parts and labor and our GOT REPAIR warranty benefits.

3. Here’s the beautiful part: If you break it again after we repair it, you AUTOMATICALLY have our GOT REPAIR benefits attached to the phone (which came with your repair for FREE) and we’ll repair it again under our GOT REPAIR program. This only costs you $45 and now you’re into Mission Repair for $144 total.

4. If you break it again (for the 3rd time) then you only pay $45 again. In fact, for Apple’s Accidental Incident Price of $396 I mentioned before, we only charge $189. And there’s the bread and butter of it.

So think it through – there are some benefits to having AppleCare on your device, but to merely go on the basis that Apple now includes accidental damage, my example above of using the iPhone 4 screen repair is pretty clear cut. Mission Repair rises out among the competition, and remains the Intelligent Choice.

Until next time, take care, Ryan

I just registered the kids for school!

Hello all, I got an automated email from my kid’s high school suggesting to register them this week, which I did. I went through the information, gave them my payments, added money into their lunch accounts and clicked “Register NOW”. I think that I might not tell them yet. . .that I registered them. . .because it just brings some “reality” to the summer. I mean they have been off of school for a couple of months now and the SHOCK of thinking that they have to go back soon has not become a reality yet.

I think that I’ll be a good dad and give them another week of no stress or worry about getting back to the classroom.

Summer as a child is an amazing time. I can still remember the feeling of being “free”, staying up late and sleeping in. Swim parties and the beach were always on my mind!

That being said, we’ve had a ton of summer “mishaps” coming through our repair center, liquid damage being a huge culprit. Water and electronics don’t play well and we’re continually dealing with liquid damaged iPhones and iPods. It’s a normal thing here at our repair center and we have a few tips and tricks that can help increase your odds when this might happen to you. Click here if you’ve gotten your iPhone wet!

Regardless let’s issue a new coupon code today. I was intending to give a new coupon out on Friday of last week – thanks for everyone’s patience. I was out of the office until today, so this one will be good through Sunday, 7/24/2011. Just use coupon code “school” to immediately get 10% off of your iPhone repair, or any other repair service or part that we offer, expires on July 24, 2011 at midnight!

Until school starts, enjoy that long hot summer and we’ll be back soon to talk a little more business!

Best, Ryan

Is it true? Apple violates your trust in privacy in iPhone iOS 4. . .

Good morning everyone, I came across this article in a Linkedin discussion which I thought was very interesting.
——–
“Apple has violated your personal trust. How?

By installing technology into your iPhone that tracks your EVERY move. Over at MoCoNews.net in their article iPhone Keeps Record Of Everywhere You Go it says that Apple’s tracking of your data will never leave your phone. Here’s the key:

The file contains the latitude and longitude of the phone’s recorded coordinates along with a timestamp, meaning that anyone who stole the phone or the computer could discover details about the owner’s movements using a simple program.

“Alasdair has looked for similar tracking code in [Google’s] Android phones and couldn’t find any,” said Warden. “We haven’t come across any instances of other phone manufacturers doing this.”

And if you get a new phone, the data is transferred to your new phone.

“The Fourth Amendment is a protection against actions of the State, NOT actions of private institutions, or individuals.”

Does anyone think that once the state or any criminal knows this data is available, it’ll go after that data anyway it can, legal or illegal? Even though we have the fourth amendment, the government or criminal can STILL take legal or illegal actions to obtain this data AND use this data against you. And you may never know of it!

Imagine losing your phone “for an hour” and then find it reappearing again. Someone has downloaded your info and returned it without you knowing they’ve done it. Because we as iPhone users were not aware of these location logs anyone could have got the data and done harm to anyone, without our knowledge of it happening.

What if you’re Steve Jobs and your iPhone is lifted from you and this data is downloaded, do you think competitors would love this info? What if you were a CEO or person of means or had other important knowledge? Not everyone is trustworthy in my view, you may believe that everyone or all corporations are good, I don’t.

If the cell phone companies need the data to help improve the quality of my cell phone service, I don’t mind that.

It’s the access that bothers me. The point is that things are possible in some scenarios above and Apple did not ask for my PERMISSION to log my info which others might have access to, and therefore my TRUST is violated, no matter how non threatening it may seem.

Solution? Give us a “911″ tracking of info in case of an emergency, but let me have the choice of turning the rest on or off to the level that I choose.”

They guys over at mocoNews.net also elaborated on it in a similar article on their site.

Big brother is watching! Should we be worried?
