Casey can tell you the differences…

My son Casey is in the market for a new phone. I can feel the push coming from him, and his iPhone 5 just doesn’t seem to be cutting it any more.

So last night I heard him talking to Dandra and making the “sales pitch” to her and trying to talk her into getting a new phone as well. She asked “what’s the difference between the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus?”

It’s mainly about screen size. At Mission Repair we have found that both size screens are just are easily “crackable” as another; and both are equally difficult to repair.

The world’s iPhones have got thinner and lighter since 2007 but in late 2014 Apple really worked some iPad Air-style magic on the dimensions of its latest handsets. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is just 6.9mm thick (shaving another 10% off the already slim 7.6mm iPhone 5S) while the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus has a thickness of just 7.1mm.

Again, the screen is where we find the biggest gap between the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus – it’s the main distinction between the models. The iPhone 6’s display measures 4.7 inches corner-to-corner at a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels (or 326 pixels-per-inch).

The 6 Plus ups this to 5.5 inches and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (401ppi). These figures put the iPhone 5S firmly in the shade, with its 1136 x 640 pixel, 326ppi display.

All that means you get more pixels on the 6 Plus spread across a larger area. Website text will be bigger, movies can be viewed from further away, text will be sharper, and so on. It also makes the device harder to hold in just one hand, but the one-handed mode built into iOS 8 (the operating system that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus ship with) should be able to alleviate some of those problems.

Both of iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus feature the same camera lens technology. That means an 8-megapixel shooter (as with the iPhone 5S) but an improved f/2.2 aperture and processing algorithms, so your pictures are going to look better than ever in all conditions.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus unsurprisingly make the jump to Apple’s A8 64-bit dual-core processor, giving it more oomph for your games and video editing. On-board RAM remains constant at 1GB, however, so for most day-to-day tasks you’re not going to notice a huge difference in the capabilities of these two phones.

The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus match in terms of storage capacities too: for the first time there’s a 128GB level to join the 64GB and 16GB options. You can pick any of these three with any handset, though the iPhone 6 Plus is more expensive across the board, so you’ll be paying more for the same amount of space in return for a larger device and clearer display.

I’ve used both phones and happiest with the smaller iPhone 6. I personally think that the 6 Plus is a bit overbearing…plus it doesn’t fit into the cup holder in my Toyota as nicely as the smaller version.

Just in case you were wondering…Ryan

Huge price decrease on iPhone 6 Plus screen repairs announced!

Hello friends of electronics!

Mission Repair has been handling the iPhone 6 Plus repair since its release, and we are happy to announce a price decrease on the iPhone 6 Plus screen repair (white or black) today.

Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 9.32.19 AM

The 5.5 inch screen is a huge leap forward for Apple, moving its iPhone range into the uncharted waters of the phablet market currently dominated by Samsung and other Android devices.

Apple has reached a previously untapped audience of smartphone users – those who demand a large screen, with ‘productivity’ the main buzzword being thrown around.

In terms of specs and design there isn’t a huge amount of difference between the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 6 – apart from the obvious size which initially led to a big difference in price for repair; but today we have closed the gap and are happy to pass the savings onto our customers.

Cracked iPhone 6 Plus screen repair – success!

Hello again, it’s been a busy blogging morning-

Earlier today I wrote a short blog about a cracked iPhone 6 Plus screen that we received in for repair. The picture was pretty devastating, and you can see that original blog here. If you click the link you can see the “before” picture. Here’s the “after”:

Notice that the customer’s background image is still there. That’s because we DON’T mess with your data when we service a unit at Mission Repair…unless it’s the data that’s the issue. In the case of a screen repair, we’ll simply replace the screen so when our customers get their phone back, it’s just like it was before the screen was damaged. This is a HUGE value and time saver for anyone that has had to migrate or restore a backup from the cloud. Every time I do it, it seems like I have issues.

This customer is done, out the door and back in business. I do recommend a case for the iPhone 6 Plus…just simply because of the size of the unit is difficult to manage for some people. We all know that accidents can happen, but if you can avoid dropping your iPhone 6 Plus…well, accidents happen.

Take care, Ryan

iPhone 6 Plus cracked screen – it happens.

Good morning-

I haven’t blogged about the iPhone 6 Plus cracked screens yet, so I grabbed a customer unit to show exactly what can happen when these beauties are dropped. Just as suspected…they crack! You can’t really stop physics, so it’s a good idea to take extra care when handling a large device like the iPhone 6 Plus.

I feel terrible for this customer…it’s truly a hassle for the customer to have to perform a repair like this on a phone that is just so new…and so expensive. Yes, Mission Repair is here for customers like this; however we pride ourselves on keeping units active and working for a LONG time (when I was in the tech room earlier today I saw an original iPhone screen being repaired!) but we’re also here for the newest, latest and greatest when we can be of service.

Once my techs are completed with this iPhone 6 Plus screen repair, I’ll post a follow up blog to show you the difference. You can probably imagine that it’ll look like a new phone…and it will.

Until then, I’ll be back shortly.

Take care, Ryan

P.S. For those of you that are interested: I checked this customer’s iPhone 6 Plus to see if it was bent…and it’s NOT!

iPhone 6 Plus Bending? Like a boomerang.

Hello blog readers-

There’s been a lot of press about the iPhone 6 Plus and the fact that it seems to be “bending” when left in your pocket for a while. Wait, what? BENDING? This seems improbable!

bendediphone6

Maybe Apple should make a “bendy-straw-accordion” version of the iPhone 6 Plus. Or you might need to have it repaired. You can wrap it around your handlebars if you want to 😉

Bending an iPhone is not that improbable. We here at Mission Repair have seen every type of iPhone disaster imaginable. Bent phones, while rare, do happen. The iPhone 5 and 5S are perfect examples of a rugged phone. They have squared off edges with additional metal strengtheners along each edge. The iPhone 6 Plus has rounded edges and is made of aluminum and does not have the same strengtheners as it’s predecessor.

So then there’s a “heat” theory. An iPhone 6 Plus slips into your pocket, and then starts to heat up. This gets the metal hot and therefore logically will make it more pliable. There are a few stories on forums and blogs that are popping up with customer horror stories…but let’s not all panic yet. There’s a lot to be discovered about the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus that only time will tell.

Want some advice? Don’t put the iPhone 6 Plus into your back pocket and sit on it. Actually, don’t do this with any phone. These are small hand-held electronic devices, but they don’t have flexibility or the design to remain pocket bound. That’s your wallet’s job.

Let us know if you have any questions or if you’ve found that your iPhone 6 Plus is bent and you’re not sure why; we’d love to investigate!

Have a great day, Ryan
