Zombies in the Amazon.

I saw this yesterday on the Wall Street Journal and thought that it was quite interesting.  In case you haven’t seen it:

The zombie apocalypse will void Amazon’s terms of service!

Amazon has just released a new set of tools for game developers in a package called Lumberyard. In its updated terms of service, Amazon said the game makers shouldn’t use the Lumberyard development tools for “life-critical or safety-critical systems” — except in the event of the zombie apocalypse.

The terms of service say the Lumberyard software code isn’t intended for developers to use in code for medical equipment, driverless cars, airplanes, air traffic control or nuclear facilities.

Then, tongue in cheek, Amazon noted that Lumberyard materials shouldn’t be used for manned spacecraft or for military use in connection with live combat.

But if all hell should break loose (literally), Amazon said developers should ignore all those restrictions.

“This restriction will not apply in the event of the occurrence (certified by the United States Centers for Disease Control or successor body) of a widespread viral infection transmitted via bites or contact with bodily fluids that causes human corpses to reanimate and seek to consume living human flesh, blood, brain or nerve tissue and is likely to result in the fall of organized civilization,” Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) said in its terms of service.

Lumberyard, released on Monday, is a free game engine integrated with Amazon’s cloud services and its live video game streaming service, Twitch. Amazon says Lumberyard will allow developers to utilize the company’s vast computer power and storage systems that come from its massive data centers.

Apparently, it’s not uncommon for companies to bury jokes in their typically long and boring terms of service.

It’s prompting me to have some fun with my website polices.  Maybe I’ll embed a coupon code in there somewhere for anyone that gets to the bottom of it…we’ll see!!

The Kracken?

Hi there!  Have a cracked screen?

At first glance, it doesn’t even look recognizable.  This is an iPhone 6 that arrived recently at the Mission Repair lab in Lenexa Kansas, and it needed some TLC to say the least.

Sydney got right on it and cleanly removed the shattered screen assembly.  She’s not one to mess around and she’s got the technical capability and tenacity to get this tedious job done fast.  She’s a “robo-tech”.  That’s a compliment!

To answer my own question, no we typically don’t see screens more damaged than this.  This one is pretty bad, but fortunately all that was needed was an iPhone 6 screen to be installed and the customer was on their way.

iPhone 6. Will it bend?

Good morning iPhone fans!

It’s not unusual that I ask my technicians to take a few pictures of phones that are severely damaged…but it is unusual that an iPhone 6 would come into us in this bad of shape!  Check out the “before pictures” below:

Of course, this iPhone 6 needed a lot of TLC…but once we replaced the back case and the glass, the rest of the phone was still working.  This is a testament to the “ruggedness” of the rest of the phone even though we all know that the glass can break very easily.  Obviously this phone was run over or caught in a car door or something.  Normally they don’t look this bad.  Once repaired, they typically tend to look this good!

So when people ask “can you fix my iPhone?!?”, just take a look at the pictures above and judge for yourself…if it’s not as bad of the first two pictures, there’s a good chance that Mission Repair will be able to help you out.  I mean, there’s not much more someone can do to try to test our skills, right?  Thanks to my technician Casey for handling this one.

So my iPhone 6 is bent – it’s not a myth.

Hello everyone,

I noticed this weekend that my new iPhone 6 screen was “clicking” when I pressed down on it along the left hand side. It appears that the screen wasn’t sitting in the unit properly. Then I noticed that my home button was kind of “clicking” as well. The home button normally just depresses smoothly and silently. Not mine, it’s “clicking” and you can actually hear it!

So I took a closer look at my phone, and unbelievably, it’s bent. Right along the edge. The worst part being right at the sim card tray area…

If I hold my phone up and look along the edge, it’s apparent that it’s bent.

So now…what to do? I own a repair shop as you know…but the last thing I want to do is open up a new “under warranty” phone when I can take it in for a replacement. But wait, Apple ISN’T replacing bent phones under warranty. Do you know why? They are deemed “damaged” by the customer and that’s not a warranty related cause. Armed with this info, I tried something simple on my own.

I bent it back.

A little pressure and all is well. Seems unbelievable that a phone could bend like this.

Without opening the device, I simply held it as shown above, and pressed with some aggressive but even “force” with my thumb against the sim card tray area. Guess what…the phone is straight again, the screen is sitting flush in the frame, and the home button is once again silent.

Now, I already know that some of you won’t believe this is true. It is. And some will speculate that it can’t be done. I did it. These iPhone 6 units are thin and BENDABLE.

Clearly, you could go too far so I don’t recommend that anyone do this at home or on their own phone. I am not suggesting that you put to much force on your device because you can break things, namely the screen could crack or you could have issues with your logic board. However without tools or dis-assembly, I was able to “straighten” out my phone without issues.

How did I bend it in the first place? I have NO IDEA. I NEVER put it in my back pocket or sit on it…so your guess is as good as mine. I think it’s just a bad design…because I have tortured other phones in my life and they never bent. Go figure.
