What does liquid damage look like in a computer?

It’s just about daily we get a laptop in with liquid damage…where the customer knows (or admits) what happened to the unit and why it needs repair. Many times our customer doesn’t know why their computer has failed; maybe a child spilled a glass of water, or something spilled in their book bag with the computer in it, or even extreme humidity can cause “liquid damage” issues. If we open a laptop and it looks like there’s a venti caramel latte in there it’s obvious. But some times the liquid spill is so small, it takes a while to figure it out.

Don’t get me wrong, the smaller the better. Less water in a computer is easier to repair than more water in a computer!

Here’s an example. This unit’s keyboard wouldn’t work:


Upon close inspection, look at all of the gold pins that run up and down against the white plastic body of the connector. See how some of them a not gold? They are corroding, causing the electrical connection between the cable and connector to fail. In turn, causing the keyboard to fail.

When any wire or cable product is exposed to water, any metallic component (such as the conductor, metallic shield, or armor) is subject to corrosion that can damage the component itself and/or cause termination failures. If water remains in printed circuit boards or low voltage cables, it could accelerate insulation deterioration, causing premature failure. Wire and cable listed for only dry locations may become a shock hazard when energized after being exposed to water, such as in a computer, tablet or iPhone.

Any recommendations for repairing liquid damage devices are based on the assumption that the water (or other liquid) contains no high concentrations of chemicals, oils, etc. If it is suspected that the water has unusual contaminants, such as may be found in gasoline or even acidic orange juice for example, it may make replacing parts a necessity rather than repair.

We will try our best to repair liquid damaged units when you need them; this process is not easy, nor is it fast. But it can be done. A good piece of advice: don’t turn on your device within 48 hours of liquid exposure. And certainly DO NOT PLUG IT INTO THE WALL. Get it into us to we can evaluate the issue and correct it if possible.

The greatest wedding cake ever! Or are these wedding cakes?

Good morning, this is the real deal.

This was the wedding cake of my good friends Shawna and David, that just had their anniversary this month. It’s been a short 5 years since I took this picture, but it’s so amazing that I knew it was worth the blog to keep it’s memory alive!


Of course, Shawna and David are fans of Apple, but Shawna is also working her dream job in Cupertino at the Apple Headquarters. She’s probably working right now with Tim Cook inventing something spectacular that we will see next year. Or maybe she’s cleaning the company kitchen 😉 All I know is that she’s a team player. I’ll head out to California to visit soon!

Congratulations Shawna on your anniversary. Oh yeah, this is still an amazing wedding cake.

Happy October.

Good morning, I can’t really believe that I haven’t said it yet, but Happy October!

Wait a second, it’s already October 16th? I’m losing time somewhere. Somehow. Lately I’m been doing a lot of work with my technicians, it’s bringing me back to my roots. Speaking of my roots, can anyone tell me what this is?


If you guessed an “Auto-Inject Floppy Disk Drive”, then you really know your vintage computer parts! This was one of my first projects in the business back in 1994; testing these drives for functionality. It was then that my father purchased a floppy disk drive repair business (consisted of a single employee and a few pieces of test equipment) and off we went into the floppy disk drive repair business for ourselves to compliment our monitor repairs and other component level services. The floppy drive repair business was so good that were were performing hundreds per week…but like all technology, things are bound to change! Needless to say, our floppy disk drive business is no longer around; but it was the precursor to what Mission Repair is today.

While I’m still the master at repairing old floppy disk drives, that doesn’t pay the bills. At Mission Repair we are doing everything we can to stay on top of the technological curve and adapt to new products when we can. If there’s something that you’d like to see us repair, give us a call! This means that I won’t get my hands dirty – this week I soldered on a blown capacitor on a older PCB for a customer that has been coming to us for years…he just likes the way I solder 😉
