Back to school. (A true story)

Hello everyone, how was your weekend?

Mine was full of back-to-school activities including registering my son for his Sophomore year at Spring Hill High School, and driving down to Pittsburg, Kansas to get my daughter moved into her new apartment! Another year of college is upon her.

The nice part about moving this weekend was that it was 106 degrees outside in Pittsburg. Wonderful πŸ˜‰

So we made several trips to and from her storage unit across town and into her cute 2 bedroom apartment that she is renting with her roommate. She’s gone from 4 girls in a larger unit down to just 2 girls this year and I personally think that she’s going to be much happier in the long run.

I am her dad, and I understand that I have obligations to “serve” my daughter, however there is an unwritten rule that when you help someone move. . .that they buy the pizza and drinks. It’s a common repayment that you’ll find all across the country – I mean, the person asking for help just needs to buy the goodies at the end of the day. Jordyn has worked all summer as a lifeguard and I figured that this common informality was going to be well taken care of.

Well, she wasn’t prepared for this task.

So here I am with the only thing to eat in the house. . .a bag of Doritos and a can of squeeze cheese. Truth be told I was starving at this point so it actually hit the spot.

In a pinch, Doritos will do.

I think that this was truly an honest effort on her part, but she doesn’t realize that this “college meal” was lacking a little bit in nutrition and “sustainability”.

So I had a few chips and ran to the local market to get her some real groceries:

Well played Jordyn, you got me to buy the dinner too!

In addition to a few items that will give her a few options for dinners – as well as paper towels and toilet paper (there wasn’t a square of it in the house!)

So I’m writing this blog to all of the parents out there in Back to School mode. It’s a stressful time for everyone and it’s about give and take. I hope that you can stop, step back and enjoy a “Doritos and cheese” meal with your student in the next couple of weeks as they are all gearing up for the school year and all of us parents are here to help guide them on their way.

I realize now it’s not the fact that I didn’t get pizza πŸ˜‰ It was about being there for my daughter and I’d do it again.

Good luck to you all in these next few “back to school” weeks.

Best, Ryan
