I’m going to share an old family secret recipe with you!

Good morning folks, what a heck of a weekend. We were busy. I mean like so overwhelmed that meals were not even a luxury we could stop and enjoy. So last night my General Manager, Troy came over to my house so we could prepare for the short “after-Memorial-Day-Weekend” week that we have begun today.

Frankly it was getting late, and since I hadn’t had dinner yet, I pulled out an old family favorite because I thought Troy was ready for the experience. It was time to share Ryan’s Famous Bean and Bacon Sandwiches with him!

I know what you’re thinking. This has to be some sort of Midwest thing and only someone from Kansas would concoct such a meal. Well, I hate to disappoint you, but this recipe was taught to me be my Grandmother back in Southern California back in 1995. She had been making these for years as her mother (my Great Grandmother) taught her, and I am going to continue the tradition by passing on the love for as many people as I can 😉 Please note that this is not a “healthy” food – it’s a “comfort” food and I would not recommend this as part of any diet plan!

So let’s get started.

First you’re going to need a few slices of bread, a can of Bush’s baked beans, butter, cooked bacon, and slices of american cheese:

Next, you should start by heating the beans up in a saucepan on the stove. Just get them bubbly. While the beans are heating, spread the bread with butter on a cookie sheet:

The next step is to layer the hot beans over the buttered bread. Just a thin layer is preferable. You don’t want the sandwiches to be too mushy:

Then you’ll break up the crispy bacon and layer it on top of the beans:

Finally, add a slice of american cheese over the bacon to complete the building of the sandwich:

Now place them into a preheated broiler, just for about 3 minutes. Watch them closely as the cheese will burn quickly – you’re going to want to get the cheese nice and bubbly and cooked to your liking:

Once they are done, eat them “open face” with a fork, or if you let them cool a bit, you can pick them up and eat them “on the go”:

We gobbled these up at about midnight last night and oh boy were they tasty! As Troy was scooping his last bite, I was able to get him to say “These are multifaceted pieces of artwork”. Good enough for me!
